I've found stamina to still be useful but not nearly as important as in BotW because of ascend and zonai vehicles. You can however max out your Heart Containers before entering the Divine Beasts. If you try to pick up the Heart Container afterwards, the game won't allow it. You'll have to leave the DB, swap your hearts for stamina at the Horned Statue, travel/warp back and pick up the Heart Container which will be sitting next to the resting Divine Beast then. You cannot. I got as far as two hearts short of a full second row. I think before you could only get as far as three hearts short. This probably means that the champion shrines get you spirit orbs as well, but only so many of them. Please make sure there are no major spoilers in the title, and tag any posts with spoilers in the body.
So if you have 4 full hearts, and an enemy does 8 hearts of damage, you'll lose 3.75 hearts. If you had 8 hearts for the same attack you'd lose 7.75 hearts. In my first play through I focused on hearts, but the second time I focused on stamina after getting two more hearts. I solve most problems in BOTW by climbing or gliding, so stamina for me is key. You can also cook food to get more stamina and/or hearts though.

I focused on health first to get the master sword. The master sword isn't really all that great before you upgrade it, so stam is where it's at for me. Maybe stam until 2 wheels then 2 hearts then 3rd wheel of stam and then fill hearts as much as possible. I went 1 health, 2 stamina, health till 13 hearts, stamina till max, then hearts.
