You can recruit many of them as you make your way through the game, but you have limited amounts available... Its 70/30 to me. 70% Infantry to fend of all those climbing the ladders and defending the gateway if needed. A slaughterhouse if u play with sturgia like I do. Those 30% archers are useful to help poking the invaders and supply the mangonels. I don't really care if spear or axe for the infantry, they just need to blobb the walls/ladders Pure shield infantry is Sturgian line depending on preference for spear or throwables/axes. Infantry with maces may do better vs t5+ and the Aserai Veteran infantry shreds t4 down, but the sturgians do both with little compromise on top of one of the best shields. Pure shock troop is on paper the linebreaker, though 2h vs Polearm muddies it a ... Half Tier 6 cavalry, half Battanian fian champs. Tier 6 cavalry can also function as solid infantry when dismounted. Get a banner that increases troop movement speed by 30% to compensate for their low athletics skill. Battanian Fian champions are just insane tbh. 150 of them can hold off a 1,500+ man siege.

If they have lots of archers, square formation can be painful.. but still beats other alternatives. For example, you have infantry in square formation ahead of your archers. Enemy infantry tries to envelope your square, then you charge. It gives your archers plenty of places to shoot. #13.
