1964 was a "Watershed" year for junior drum corps. The "Great Surprise" was the "Out of Nowhere" win of the VFW title by the Racine Kilties. The World Open Championships of that season were the "Contest of the year" as almost all of the junior contenders (And then some) met again in Bridgepoet CT a week after the VFW showdowns in Cleavland.
