In some states, just being a student allows you to get out of it. In others, being a student isn't enough, but if you call up the court and tell them you're a student and have finals that week, they'll cancel your jury duty date and send you another notice in a weeks or a few months (or just forget about you). In other cases, you can't get out.

It sucked. When you call in the day before, if you actually have to show up, there’s a decent chance you’ll actually get jury duty. One of the lawyers may dismiss you during the selection process if you’re lucky. The impression I got is the judges only call people in if they think that they’re actually needed.
