Before I build one, I see I have the option to make a hatchling, and I get curious. I press the button, without any hatcheries built, and my dragon just disappears.

Here Be Dragons With the ban of PU from RS, I've turned to this origin. With a small bonus to stability and unity and massive amounts of tech later on, It's the best origin for economy.
