Cleaned off the pickup on the flywheel, ran a new lead from trigger unit to coil, and tractor fired right up. Shut it off, let sit a minute, fired right back up. Let itnsit 10 minutes and now no spark again. It is not the ignition switch as I have the coil wired directly to the trigger unit for testing.A 54 inch front blade fits the 318. It was running and I was mowing then it lost power like it was on one cyl then came back I though it was fuel related. but no. It did that 3 times.

Got the new starter motor in, but couldn't get any juice through to the motor. Here is some of what I did to diagnose this.

I'm pretty sure the red wire is always hot, so you do not need to have the key on. To jump it, you need to get 12V to wherever the start signal wire attaches to the solenoid. It's purple on my tractor, but I am not sure about the 318. This is usually very easily done with a screw driver between the red wire and the start signal wire.

The later pics confirmed yours as a 1983 318 B43G machine. So, I have a 1986 B43G configured the same (with the newer replacement coil and external condenser). No volts = start tracking down the safety interlocks. The new starter spins things so fast that it takes longer to start than it used to with the original starter running slow.
