If you want to practice PVP the deathmatch servers are a pretty good way to do that, no reason to invest hours into a semi-deathmatch server to get that. However as a shooter game DayZ kinda sucks compared to mostly everything else, the gunplay mechanics just aren't that great (they're not bad they're just not exactly good). When it rains your clothes will get damp > wet > soaked. Avoid being soaked for long. Make a fire and sit near it to get warm and your clothes will dry off after just a few minutes. Good time to roast a nice wolf steak on the fire too!! Remember to make the fire somewhere quiet and as hidden as possible.
Smoke the veg in a house oven while you dry off- easier than messing with a campfire, and can smoke and cook at same time. Always carry two knives and make sure you have a spare hatchet. Get stocked and build a shelter to start storing stuff, or start a buried stash - waterproof sacks/rucksacks are great for this.

DayZ is pretty cool, but STALKER DayZ is even cooler. Arguably the best we're going to get of multiplayer STALKER for a while. Bandito Company STALKER RP is a growing DayZ Standalone PC STALKER server, using a map with everything North just to Limansk (still a large map though, takes about 3 hours to traverse). It's a "Lite-RP" server.Personally, I carry one 2x2 of canned food (usually canned bacon), one soda, and a stack of chlorine all inside a cooking pot. This allows for one back up food if you get low and still can't find an animal to hunt. One back up liquid for if you can't get to water quick enough to purify a pot with chlorine.

Only ever ended up fully geared twice though (scavenged a pistol from someone elses kill and used it to kill a fully specced out guy while he was distracted by a firefight, the second one was finding a body dead in the woods, fully specced out gun and a ton of mags and ammo!) 9. zysennz.
