John deere 4020 problems.

Tractor. 4020 John Deere. I have a 4020 that ran really well up until November. It starts good , but idles rough and when you put it under load it stalls. If you pull the choke out it will come back to life and run OK. if you feather the choke back in, it will drive around OK in lower gear. Always runs rough and always stalls out under load.The 2940 was never intended to be a replacement for a 4020. That's the spot the 4040 filled at the time, and it was a fine replacement for a 4020. The 28/2940 tractors were intended to be large utility tractors that were less expensive than a 4040, and they were exactly that. The 24 volt 4020 - is it a positive ground system? Is it the original 24 volt system where it is 12V negative ground from one battery and 12V positive ground from the other battery and is isolated from the chassis? The generator, voltage regulator and starter are all 24 volt and are a totally isolated system, 12 volt is drawn off for everything ...The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. On a 4020 when the hitch lever is fully back the raise valve is held open so unless they have an inlet check like later models the hydraulic discharge valves could be the issue. Subject: Re: 4020 John Deere info wanted. The early 4020 diesels came out of the factory with a goofy 24 volt positive ground system. It can be hard for the average person to work on. Some have been converted to 12 volt negative ground that is a lot simpler and easier to diagnose electrical problems on.

The power difference between them and a 4020 is very noticeable. Without a turbo a 4020 will usually smoke very heavy once you push it to around 110 hp. With the turbo the 4320 can push up near 150 with very little difficulty.
