You can put it in drive, the bus would go sometimes! I pulled out the 40 amp fuse in the battery compartment and put it back in then it worked. Thats how we got it back to the garage. A couple of times it said range shift inhibited. I pulled codes out and had ( i cant remember the number) gear 1 incorrect ratio as well as the p0500. I then pulled it in the garage and noticed that the edge came up with a warning of 198mph. pulled codes again and had 2 new codes. p0876 trans fluid press sensor/switch D ckt range/performance.

Mike L has the answer-- the pump seals leak, and the converter fluid drains back into the pan. When you start it, it has to fill the converter before the clutches apply. That can set "Shift Range Inhibited" if you put it in gear before the converter is full. Just let it idle for 30 seconds and it should be OK.
