The town of Cut Bank is a pretty far drive from Glacier - not an ideal base. Yes, I would probably spend a night on the west side if you can find something close to the entrance to reduce your drive time. Your concern about crowds ( parking, lodging issues) in GNP is correct. The logistic (in addition to less driving) of visiting NCNP would likely be easier.
