My advice to somebody in the OP’s position would be to have the heirloom in question appraised, decide the minimum price they’re willing to settle for, offer relatives first refusal at 25% over that price, and, if somebody is willing to buy, allow themselves to be bartered down to the minimum price in the name of family.
