It advances the timing a bit at 5000 rpm, then retards it at 5500 rpm, causing the torque curve to effectively hit the wall. It's enough of a source of trouble and not enough of a benefit for Mercury to stock them for replacement.

What you should have on the rectifier is 5 wires. 2 yellows, 2 reds, and a gray. (it is possible that you have 1 extra black wire, and if you do, it's a ground). The 2 yellows should go to the stator, the 2 reds tie together and go to the starter solenoid where the battery cable connects. And the gray is the tach wire.Jan 8, 2011. #1.
